Ivy Creek Farm
Situated in the Monticello Appellation right outside of Charlottesville, the Holzman’s Ivy creek Farm has some of the oldest and highest quality vinifera vines planted in Virginia. As a result, Ivy Creek produces some of the most superior grapes on the east coast. Their grapes are sold to several area wineries, including Prince Michel, and consistently win gold medals.
One of the earliest Virginia pioneers of the Viognier grape, Ivy Creek Farm brought acclaim to the first bottling of Virginia Viognier. Today, these vines are over 20 years old and still produce some of the best Viognier in the United States.
Other grapes produced are Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Located on the eastern shore of Virginia, Chatham Vineyards’ meticulous viticultural practices lead to the premium quality wine that is produced from their vines.
The warmer winters and cooler summers with a prevailing breeze allow for a longer growing season than many other viticulture regions in the state. The terrior of Chatham is primarily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean which closely resembles areas of Bordeaux. The groomed shoots are managed on a vertical shoot positioning trellis, thus taking advantage of the intense sun exposure found on the Eastern Shore.
Growers Jon and Mils Wehner produce award winning Chardonnay and Merlot wines. Their Prince Michel Chatham Vineyard Merlot has been a particular favorite in gold medal competitions.
Mountain View Vineyards
At 1,700 feet, the vineyards of Andy and Megan Seibel just outside of Roanoke are of the highest elevation for any of Prince Michel’s premium wines. This allows for a longer growing period which in turn produces grapes that have the advantage of longer, more steady ripening. They base their “cultivation on both science and intuitiveness” which must work since their 10 acre vineyard produces some of Virginia’s most exceptional Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Viognier, and Chardonnay.
The Seibel’s relationship with Prince Michel illustrates how a large winery can work with low yield producing growers to obtain premium fruit for quality wines. This relationship is exemplified in the numerous gold medals won by the 2002 Prince Michel Mountain View Cabernet Franc.
Mt Juliet Vineyard
Mt. Juliet is a breathtaking beautiful estate vineyard located just outside Crozet, Virginia in western Albemarle County. These vineyards boast southeastern slopes surrounded by peaks of the Blue Ridge, deep fertile soil, and plantings of some of the highest quality Chardonnay, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Manseng, and Merlot.
Truly one of the more sought after fruit sources in the state, the Grace Family of Mt. Juliet Vineyards provides Prince Michel with extraordinary building blocks for our award-winning wines.
Quaker Run Farm
In Madison County, Prince Michel’s closest partner vineyard is only fifteen minutes away. A scenic drive though the Madison County Hebron Valley, along the charming hamlet of Criglersville, brings you to the eastern slope of Graves Mountain and Quaker Run Farm. From this spectacular vineyard site, you can see miles of rolling Virginia farmland.
High elevation and good slope allow air to drain easily through the “U” shaped valley. Qualities unique to this vineyard create characteristics that make grapes from Tom and Debbie Flynn’s Quaker Run extraordinary. For example, their Chardonnay grapes produce powerful ripe apricot and grapefruit features that make them worthy to become part of our Barrel Select Chardonnay. Their 2006 Syrah is superb and is now in barrels awaiting an eighteen month nap until its 2008 debut.
The Chiles family has been planting orchards in and around Charlottesville for generations. Like several of our growers, Huff Chiles has found success in growing quality wine grapes alongside his apple and peach orchards. The high elevation and steep slopes of Carter’s Mountain provide tremendous air drainage and result in some of the best Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Typically, the Crown Orchard Chardonnay provides upfront apple and pear qualities which are showcased in our Barrel Select Chardonnay. The Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are both powerful and lend structure to our Symbius blend.
As a relatively recent addition to our growers list, the Rose’s Rosemont Vineyards provide Prince Michel with a wide array of varieties which include Pinot Grigio, Vidal Blanc, Merlot, and Syrah.
The vineyard is located in southeast Virginia near the North Carolina border. It typically receives substantially less rainfall than most of the other growers. This results in earlier ripening and concentrated flavors.
